How Our Gradings Work
Gradings are one of the most exciting and rewarding parts of life at Diamond Kickboxing. They're the moment where all the hard work, focus and repetition comes together — and where students get to show just how far they've come. Here's everything you need to know about how our grading system works and what to expect.
Every 3–4 Months
Gradings take place roughly every three to four months, with the exact timing depending on how demanding the current curriculum is. Some blocks of the syllabus are more technical and take a little longer to master, while others can be assessed sooner. We never rush a grading — it happens when the students are genuinely ready, not just when the calendar says so.
Designed to Challenge
Every grading is designed to constantly challenge the students. It's not a box-ticking exercise — it's a genuine test of whether a student is ready to move to the next stage of their journey and earn their new belt. Each grading assesses the techniques, combinations and understanding worked on throughout the grading period, and students are expected to demonstrate them to a real standard.
The Bar Rises With You
As students improve, the criteria for passing change too. The further along the journey a student travels, the more is asked of them — and that's entirely by design. We want every child to experience the real sense that hard work pays off, and that nothing worth having comes without effort. By raising the standard as they grow, we're helping them build the correct work ethic that will serve them for the rest of their lives, long after they've left the mats. It puts them in the best possible stance for the future — not just as martial artists, but as people.
Tested by an Outside Source
To keep every grading fair and free from bias, all curriculum worked on during the grading period is tested by an outside source. This means the person assessing your child isn't their day-to-day coach — it's an independent examiner with no attachment to the student. It ensures the result is a true, honest reflection of where the student is at, and that every belt is genuinely earned.
Fun and Full of Pride
Most importantly, gradings are fun. They're a brilliant way to see the improvement in the children — sometimes even more than they realise themselves. The atmosphere on grading day is special: nervous excitement, supportive teammates, and a real sense of achievement when that new belt is awarded. Win or learn, every student walks away having grown.
If you have any questions about an upcoming grading or what your child should be working on, please speak with a coach before or after class — we're always happy to help.
