The night before your first class, most people feel the same thing: a flutter of nervousness. That's completely normal — and it's exactly why I want to walk you through what your first session at Diamond Kickboxing actually looks like. No judgement, no pressure, and absolutely no sparring for beginners. Here is what to expect, start to finish.
Before You Arrive
Wear comfortable sportswear — a t-shirt and shorts or joggers is perfect. Bring a bottle of water and a willingness to try something new. That's it. There is no minimum fitness level and no expectation that you already know anything at all. Many of our most dedicated members started as total beginners.
Arrival
Arrive about 10 minutes before the start. You'll be greeted by your coach, shown where to put your things, and introduced to one or two friendly faces in the class. We deliberately make a point of looking after first-timers, because we remember exactly what it felt like to walk into a new dojo for the first time. You will never be left standing alone wondering what to do.
The Warm-Up
Every session begins with a structured warm-up — light movement, mobility work and some gentle stretching to prepare the body. It's paced so that anyone can keep up, regardless of starting fitness. The warm-up also quietly builds the stamina that will support everything that follows.
Technique Work
The heart of the session. Your coach will break down a fundamental technique — a stance, a guard, a punch or a kick — and you'll practice it slowly and safely. We teach in small, clear steps, with plenty of repetition and plenty of encouragement. You are learning to move well, not to fight, and there is no pressure to be perfect on day one. Beginner classes focus entirely on conditioning, coordination and individual technique — never on sparring.
Pad Work
This is the part most people fall in love with. Working on pads with a partner or your coach, you'll put the day's techniques into action. Pad work is brilliant exercise, genuinely satisfying, and a brilliant way to build real skill without any risk. It's where technique, fitness and fun all come together.
Cool Down & What's Next
We finish with a gentle cool-down and stretch, and your coach will check in with how you found it. By the end you'll have moved, learned something concrete, and — almost certainly — surprised yourself with how much you enjoyed it. Most first-timers leave already looking forward to their second class.
One Final Reassurance
Everyone in that room was a beginner once. Every black belt started with a nervous first night. You will not be judged, rushed or pushed beyond what you are ready for. Your only job in your first class is to turn up, try, and see how you feel. Everything else, we will build together.
